First Annual Southern California Pinot Days – UPDATED

18 Jan

Just thought I’d share a few pics from this fantastic event….  see you there next year!!

(that’s SM, by the way….)
UPDATE: You had to know I wouldn’t JUST post pics and not give a few thoughts, right?  Well, here are my two cents on the offerings at Pinot Days…..
With over 75 domestic Pinot producers in attendance, it was impossible to taste everything available in the 4 hours allotted, especially since many of the tables were pouring more than one wine.  I did, however, get a chance to taste some of the newer vintages (2007 was a great year) of some old standbyes – J (the winery, not “my” J) and Hitching Post had some standouts – as well as a couple of producers I’d never heard of and really enjoyed.
One such producer, Big Table Farm, turned out my personal favorite wine of the day.  Big Table Farm is the lovechild of Brian Marcy and Clare Carver, a winemaker and an artist, who left Napa for Oregon’s Willamette Valley and never looked back.  They’re currently in the process of cultivating their own vines, but in the meantime, they’re crafting some really great stuff with purchased grapes, including my favorite -  The Cow.

Made from grapes from the Resonance Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, I just loved how clean and bright this wine was, with pure fruit characteristics and a nice (yet not overwhelming) minerality.  It was perfectly balanced and left me wanting more.  In a word, yum.
Check out the Big Table Farm website here to learn more about their wines and philosophy.
Cheers!!
